Dog licenses assist in reuniting lost dogs with their owners. All dogs three months or older must be licensed by January 1 of each year.

Annual dog licenses are valid for the calendar year, January 1st through December 31st of each year.

Lifetime dog licenses are also available for purchase and DO NOT NEED TO BE RENEWED. Microchips are mandatory for the purchase of Lifetime Licenses. Also, Microchips are encouraged for annual dog license holders to ensure lost dogs are found.

City of Pittsburgh dog owners

REQUIRED BY LAW all dogs over 3 months of age must be licensed, city residents obtain their dog licenses from the City of Pittsburgh Treasurer’s Office.

PLEASE NOTE: Pennsylvania State Law mandates that all dogs 3 months of age or older must be licensed. Dog Licenses must be purchased by January 1st of each year regardless of when the license was purchased the previous year.  State Dog Wardens may issue fines up to $300 plus court cost per dog for violation of this law.
